Dr. Eve Graves is a graduate of the Drama Department at Spelman College.  After receiving her doctorate, Dr. Graves began her professional academic career at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA., where she received several awards, published several articles, and was elected to head a national professional organization. Dr. Graves was awarded a teaching fellowship from the Carnegie Center for Teaching and Learning at Stanford University. At the end of her final residency at the Carnegie Foundation, Dr. Graves decided to pursue work as an intercultural pedagogue by accepting a teaching position at the prestigious Xiamen University in China. She lived and successfully taught western theatre history and Literature in People’s Republic of China for four and a half years.

Dr. Graves’ commitment to global arts education is well regarded by international scholars.  She has been invited to present her research at international conferences in Australia, PR China, Thailand, Ghana and Europe.  Dr. Graves has been invited to serve as a conference plenary speaker for several organizations such as the Association for Theatre in Higher Education and the Southeastern Theatre Conference.

Dr. Graves is a published author and is under contract with Taylor and Francis to write a book about African American Theatre and History.  She is also working on a series of articles about interculturalism, performance and pedagogy. She enjoyed teaching in the African American Studies at for NYCCT/CUNY and Albany State University (ASU) in the Department of Fine Arts.  While at ASU, Dr. Graves helped one of her ASU Speech and Theatre students win the New York Times Maximum Shakespeare Contest.  

 

Since joining Clark Atlanta University at the Chairperson of the Department of Theatre and Communication Studies Dr. Graves has directed several plays, taken students to NYC to view plays on Broadway and chaperoned student study abroad trips to PR China, Ghana, Israel and Palestine.   She has brought numerous theatre scholars/artists such as Kathy Perkins and Pearl Cleage to campus, and directed several plays. She is a recipient of a summer NEH fellowship and she was selected as a Fulbright Specialist for term of four years.  She has won numerous awards such as an outstanding theatre educator for URTA and honored with by the City of Louisville, KY with a key to city and a day named in her honor.  However, one of Dr. Graves’ greatest honors is to serve as a ministry representative for International Students Inc., and as a foster parent in the state of GA for the NECCO organization.
