A Message from the
Political Science Chair
Dr. Biton Kurt B. Young, Department Chair

Thank you for visiting our Department's virtual home! We are excited to use it for sharing with you this unique space and the persons that bring it to life. Our site provides information that features our mission, history, traditions, faculty, students, alumni, degree programs, research paradigm, and departmental activities. We invite you to get to know more about us by exploring the pages of our site.
The Dr. Mack Henry Jones Department of Political Science is unique in several ways. We are the only traditionally private HBCU that offers programs in each of the discipline's three-degree levels: the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. This full complement of programs in political science allows us to serve a broad range of students, from secondary-level college applicants to more seasoned graduate students seeking the terminal degree in the discipline. We are also a department that is committed to producing political scientists who are both trained in the subfields that "cover the waterfront” of our discipline, but who are also able to ground their research and analyses in the political experiences and perspectives of Black and African-descended peoples and communities.
Our students can enroll in courses and conduct research that correspond to the ten subfields of our degree programs:
-
African Politics
-
Comparative Politics
-
International Relations
-
Pan-African Politics
-
Political Economy
-
Political Theory
-
Methodology
-
U.S. Government & Politics
-
Urban Politics
-
Women & Politics
In addition to our degree programs, the student experience in our department is enhanced by our many student organizations and programs, including:
-
Ujamaa Society Graduate Student Organization
-
Political Science Association
-
Political Science Debate Team
-
Pre-Law Scholars Program
-
National Black Law Students Association
In sum, I encourage you to use this site to get to know us, apply to join us, or to support us and the important work to which we are committed. Finally, do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Biton Kurt B. Young, Ph.D.
Chair, Dr. Mack Henry Jones Department of Political Science
