Dr. Shelby Lewis is Professor Emerita in the Department of Political Science at Clark Atlanta University. Her professional career began in 1962 as an Education Officer for a USAID project in Uganda. Upon returning to the US, she engaged in research, teaching, and contracting with USAID, UNDP, universities and NGOs like UNCF/SP. As a Senior Fulbright Scholar; Vice Chair of the J.W. Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board; University Professor and Administrator; Vice President for International Programs at UNCF/SP, where she managed university partnerships in 32 countries and conducted workshops to support the participation of HBCUs in the international arena, she was a global advocate for education, gender and African American history and culture. She established an Africana Women’s Studies Program, an International Center, University Linkages and Study Abroad Programs, and developed a course on the politics of education at Clark Atlanta University. She also served as President of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists and the African Heritage Studies Association.
