Bio:

Dr. Bonfas Owinga is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the Dr. Mack Henry Jones's Department of Political Science. He is an International Philanthropy Fellow of Johns Hopkins University's Center for Civil Society Studies and an internationally recognized scholar whose expertise, experience, and knowledge are frequently sought out by international media and professional organizations. His expertise includes African Politics, African Diaspora, Comparative Politics, and International Relations. His research focuses on three main areas: the intersection between civil society and democratic consolidation in Africa, civil society elite and governance in Africa, and finally, the intersection between the African diaspora, Global Africa, black internationalism, various inequalities, transnational social movements, and Pan-Africanism.

He has reviewed numerous journal articles for various journals, including African Studies Review, Voluntas, Journal of African Elections, Journal of Global South Studies, and Africa Today. He has contributed articles to various Political science journals and co-authored book chapters, including; Thomas, R. Davies, Hans P. Schmitz, Susan Appe, Daniel Barragan-Teran, Owinga, B, Paloma G. Raggo and Xie Lei (2016) "Transnational Associations and INGOs: Macro-Associations," In Smith D, et al. His work on "Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper and Participation: The Kenyan Experience, has also been published by the World Bank Institute.  He is working on a book chapter, “Teaching African Politics with a Commitment to Pan-Africanism: Strategies, Pedagogies, Programs and Challenges”.

Dr. Owinga is a Co-Pi for the National Science Foundation-funded project, Targeted Infusion: Geo-Spatial Data Systems-Policy Analysis Curriculum Enhancement Project (GDS-PACE). He has conducted consultancies for various international organizations including the World Bank, Transparency International, the International Budget Partnership. UNDP, FCDO among others. He is an active member of various professional associations, including the African Studies Association (ASA), the National Conference of Black Political Scientists (NCOBPS), the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA), and the American Political Science Association (APSA) among others.
